Manchester United manager David Moyes rued missed chances and lapses in concentration following the Reds’ Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich.
Patrice Evra fired United into the lead with a spectacular strike on 57 minutes but Bayern equalised just 22 seconds after the restart. Twenty minutes later they were 3-1 up and 4-2 on aggregate.
“As a schoolboy you get told: ‘Once you score don't concede right away’. We conceded too quickly,” Moyes said.
“It was always going to be a tough night. When we got the first goal we needed to give ourselves five or 10 minutes to stop them from getting the ball. But from the kick-off they went up the pitch and scored.
“I don't know if it was concentration or the thrill of having scored [that made us switch off]. We’ve got enough experience on the pitch where we should have been able to do that tonight.”
Despite losing the match and going out of Europe, Moyes believes the Reds can hold their heads high, having gone toe-to-toe with the current world champions.
“We didn’t do an awful lot wrong tonight,” the boss said. “The players played ever so well. I was really pleased with the performance. There were just a couple of small errors which have probably cost us.
“They're a really good side and showed it. They have great players who can play in different positions and in different ways. I thought we came here and made it difficult for them. Tactically, we tried to stifle them as much as we could and for long periods we did that. But if you lose a goal straight after you score it makes it very difficult.”
Even after Bayern had gone ahead through Thomas Muller, United had opportunities to score again.
“We had a great chance when it was 2-1. Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney worked a good chance.
“I never thought we were out of the game. I thought we were always in with a chance. We needed to score when it was 2-1 to get it to 2-2 but obviously the third goal killed us. Things didn’t go for us – I thought there was a bit of bad luck there.”
