Carrick hopes for Jones recovery

Michael Carrick has expressed his sympathy for United team-mate Phil Jones, who could miss out on this summer’s World Cup in Brazil with the shoulder injury sustained during Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Hull City.

The 22-year-old was forced off and immediately sent to hospital with his arm in a sling after colliding with Tigers defender Maynor Figueroa, a blow that places huge question marks over his fitness ahead of Roy Hodgson England squad announcement on Monday.

Carrick, who hopes to feature in the 30-man party that attends this month’s training camp in Portugal, is certain that his team-mate is young enough to bounce back and enjoy a fine Three Lions career - should his injury be as severe as first feared.

“I can only imagine what it must be like, getting injured so late on,” Michael said. “It didn’t look great and hopefully it is not as bad as it looks, but it is a problem at this stage of the season when anyone gets an injury because you are in danger of missing the summer.

“The only thing you can say is that he is so young and is that good that the chances will come again, but at this stage it is not going to soften the blow for him. If that is the case then I am hugely disappointed for him because he obviously doesn’t deserve that."

Asked about Jones' chances of playing before his injury, Carrick said: “The World Cup is the World Cup. Whatever squad is picked, anyone who goes can play because of the way things work out. There is not going to be a team set in stone that sees the whole tournament through. For someone to miss out with an injury at this stage is devastating.”

As for own chances of featuring in Hodgson's squad, Carrick is playing a patient game and keeping his fingers crossed for a positive outcome: “You just have to wait and see. It is up to the manager now to pick his squad. There is no point in me saying anything else really, there is nothing else I can do, we will just have to wait and see.”
